mScales digital weighing service can be customized with various functional add-on modules, making the service even more tailored to the individual needs of the company. One such additional feature is the automation system interface, which transmits data from coded weighings or weighings conducted in offline mode through the user interface. This ensures that, for example, handling of loading or unloading permits proceeds seamlessly with the help of a single weighing system.

Nowadays, in production facilities, self-service and efficiency are strongly emphasized. Therefore, it is critically important to enable drivers to unload or load without additional personnel. Ensuring safe and smooth unloading and loading is crucial. Integrating mScales with an automation system interface significantly enhances the workflow efficiency.

What is the practical functionality of the automation system interface?

In the automation system interface of mScales, loading or unloading permit functions are activated behind the scenes of digital code weighing. The validity period of these functions is defined for a specific product and designated delivery during a certain time frame. The driver performs an arrival weighing on their mobile interface before loading or unloading, and then enters the destination ID, such as a PIN code. Once the permit is approved, the loading or unloading spot is reserved for the driver at the agreed-upon time. The driver uses their mobile device through a browser-based program, eliminating the need for separate devices or applications.

Loading can be performed, if necessary, through a separate local interface if the use of a phone is not possible. Instructions for the driver can also be integrated into the system, such as indicating the loading area or warehouse where the cargo is to be unloaded. The driver can add information during the process, such as a note to the electronic transport document or for invoicing purposes.

Once everything is ready, the driver confirms the task as completed and drives onto the scale for the final weighing. Simultaneously, the data is transferred in real-time to the customer's business systems, and, for example, scale status information can be viewed remotely. This ensures that the right product is in the right place at the right time.

"The technology behind the automation system interface may be complex, but the interface itself and the process are intelligent and straightforward. The application is browser-based and cloud-based. All initial data can be imported into the mScales weighing service through an API interface, allowing necessary information, schedules, and detailed instructions to be further delivered to transport companies and customers for code weighing. mScales communicates the required information to the scale and automation system," says Matti Wuollet, Key Account Manager of the mScales weighing service.

Customercase: Finnsementti

A functional automation system interface was implemented for Finnsementti, providing a solution tailored to their operational needs. Finnsementti serves as an exemplary case of a company effectively utilizing automation system interface in its operations.

Challenges of Outdated Equipment

Today, customers expect fast delivery times, placing high demands on the operation of Finnsementti's production facility. Finnsementti faced challenges with outdated weighing electronics, weighing systems, and related peripherals such as ID readers and loading automation. The maintenance and management of these devices required resources, and different locations had different processes, complicating change management. Particularly during peak times and periods of high demand, when there were numerous deliveries, information and device management demanded a significant amount of attention.

Modern Automation Integration as a Solution

Finnsementti had a requirement that no changes should be made to the company's internal system, as they were using an extensive ERP system, and modifying it would have been both costly and complex. Together with the customer, our experts went through the order and delivery process. Based on a standard solution, we developed a new, modern automation integration with the goal of making the transition as easy and secure as possible for the customer.

In the project, Finnsementti had a tight schedule and a substantial workload, so a careful project plan and schedule were crucial. Every project with us begins with an initial meeting and meticulous planning. At the start of the project, it is essential to discuss together where everything starts and what the project aims to achieve. Use cases for different process stages are detailed, and the technical integration is modeled so that all parties understand the steps and objectives.

The project commenced with a pilot site at one of Finnsementti's locations, where the scale was already in need of modernization. Once we had the practical aspects functioning at this location, we extended the knowledge to other sites. The project's focal point was learning through practical implementation and discovering best practices: together with the customer, we discarded old implementation methods and adopted new, more efficient ways of operating.

Through the project, we digitized the entire Finnsementti weighing service, integrated truck scales into the cloud, and elevated the automation system interface add-on module to a new level. Nowadays, mScales is in use at all Finnsementti facilities, including two production locations and seven terminals.
